Darwin in Shipshape

Darwin in Shipshape

German shipbuilder Luerssen has been awarded the contract to build 12 Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV) by the Australian Government.

The OPVs will be built in Adelaide and Perth over the next 10 -15 years, in partnership with ACS, Austel and Civmec. They will will gradually replace the current Royal Australian Navy’s Armidale class patrol boats. Six of the Armidales are homebased in Darwin and it is expected that a similar number of OPVs will be based in Darwin.

Homebasing provides the opportunity to maintain and service these vessels in Darwin. To help make this a reality, the Northern Territory Government is progressing investigation of a ship lift facility at East Arm in cooperation with the Paspaley Group.

As an adjoining land owner to the ship lift site, the Land Development Corporation is currently designing a Marine Service Area which will provide land for ship maintenance and servicing companies to establish facilities. In addition, the existing adjoining Common User Facility will provide hardstand space to store and repair ships.
